Definition Refers to atherosclerotic occlusive disease of lower limb arteries, usually superficial femoral and popliteal arteries,a New Delhi an important manifestation of systemic atherosclerosis
   
Prognosis The course varies from gradual progression over many years in most cases with easily controlled symptoms, to rapid progress in some with tissue necrosis and needing surgical intervention.
   
General Measures Cessation of smoking is an absolute ‘must’. Strict adherence to steps detailed under. Secondary prevention under CAD. (refet to Chapter on subject). Daily walking programme to develop collaterals. To walk until claudication develops, then rest for three minutes and resume walking. To be done at least 8 times a dayControl of background illnesses like hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidaemis, and COPD,Weight reduction if overweight. Careful foot and skin care.
   
Advice to Patient To stop smoking, avoid tobacco chewing. Regular wlking, 30 minutes at a time 3 times a week at least. Care of feet. (refer ‘Care of diabetic foot” under Appendices)Adequate control of background illnesses.
   
Follow Up Every month to assess progressing of ischaema, with lessening of ‘walking distance’ without pain, and other changes mentioned above.
   
Inadequate Response Consider surgical procedures.
   
Prevention Of smoking.Adequate management of diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidaemis to avoid to delay onset of vascular complications
